Only eaten breakfast here so can't comment on other food, but for the prices charged this place is very average. 1st day i had poached eggs and bacon on toast, which was nice but very expensive for what it was. the 2 day i opted for the breakfast deal, it looked good but unfortunately tasted not so good. the sausage clearly had been pre cooked which i understand places have to do, but this felt like it had been pre cooked days ago, rubbery, awful taste and had an unusual smell too. on my 3rd and final visit i opted tor the safe option of just toast and butter. they charge 80p for a slice of toast, it was good toast but really!! 80p??? place has so much potential, it's a real unique setting, with friendly staff.
It must be twenty years since i was last in russell's, we called in for early morning for breakfast which was really good. nice food at very good prices and a wonderful setting. i won't wait another 20 years, this will be a regular place to eat from now on. 😋
This place is an absolute gem. one of my favourite places to go in the town centre. full of familiar old world charm, go down the steps and sit on a wooden chair and look at all the photos of local legends on the wall. the food is homely and well cooked, i recommend the club sandwich or hot beef barm and chips. the breakfast here is also very good. the staff are friendly and welcoming, the service is quick, the food is very tasty and it's also reasonable. places like this are getting fewer these days, it's a local legend. just mind your head on the light shade when you stand up.
This was my first visit in over 20 years. the look may not have changed but the food quality has. service was great, polite and quick but the fish and chips! many years ago i remember getting the biggest fresh battered cod on a large oval plate. this however was mushy frozen breaded reformed fish fillet from a supermarket. the chips were ok, standard fried frozen chips. my wife found her pie more enjoyable than i found the fish. soft drinks are very over priced. i wanted to support a local cafe that was once great. it looks dated inside but still nice but sadly the food just isn't good enough, especially as it's advertised as fresh fish and chips.
