One abbey ruin in canterbury with a long history, it was built in ad597. most of places are ruins, but the introductions are informative. also there are staff who walk around the convent dressed as monks and nuns, offering help and explanations to visitors.
Well done and thoroughly explained. loads of research is available. . i find it absolutely crazy this abbey was created in 587 ad. the stories this place tells very quiet on the thursday i went. a volunteer on the site who was cleaning asked me if i had any questions. i did and not only did this gentleman answer them it was almost like my own personal tour experience. he knew so much.
Under the care of english heritage, this is a unesco world heritage site. it's where english christianity started as a result of the success of st. augustine's mission. the ruins are at ground level for much of the site, after henry viii's dissolution of the monasteries. english heritage has done a good job in unobtrusive interpretation of the buildings and there's an informative display of artifacts in the visitor centre.
Eh have presented this site really well with plenty of free information on site and an interesting inside display with something for everyone. good clean facilities without too much tourist 'junk' a lovely visit despite the weather! the volunteer was good to chat to.
It's an impressive site part of the english heritage that will show the visitors the vast history england has. the place is absolutely clean and very well maintained. it's not very far away from the canterbury cathedral, only about 15 minutes walking. even though you can only see parts of the walls, you can easily determine the enormousness size of this old abbey. audio guides are a useful tool and can provide great support. staff is very polite and will give valuable information and support. toilets are available too. definitely worth visiting.
