The Original John's Plaice

It's probably the best fish and chips we've had recently. My girls who can be pretty fussy. One had turkey dinosaurs, chips and gravy and the other had sausage and gravy. All completely finished. My good lady had cod and chips, the batter was so tasty and light. I had salt and chilli chicken and chips all very tasty. Will happily return again when down this way!

Absolutely lovely fish and chips. Batter crispy not greasey. Had the pensioners deal with mushy peas, tea and bread and butter. At 10.95 in August 2023, I think that's pretty damn good. The place is a bit dated, hey its been there a while but it was spotlessly clean and staff were very nice. Give it a go if your passing, you won't be disappointed.

Have been passing by this eatery, but never stopped, always said the next time. Glad I stopped, the fish was very tasty, I had Cod, the wife got the Haddock. Will be stopping off next time I pass.

A handy stop off for a quality chip shop… This place is quirky but that’s why I like it, it really feels somewhat like an old American style diner - it could be because I somewhat remember it as a Little Chef but there’s just something that feels nostalgic about Johns Plaice. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by smiling waitresses who showed us to a table and brought us menus promptly, the menus by the way are huge! There’s a wide range of food here, not just fish and chips! I ordered a ham roll with chips and gravy, my partner ordered an egg mayo sandwich with chips and gravy, she got told there was no egg mayo left so she went for a tuna sandwich instead. The food was all really tasty, big portion sizes too! My ham roll was filled with thick, good quality ham and the bread was soft, my chips and gravy were good too - just very filling! My partner enjoyed her food too and we both left with happy bellies after a good feed on our way home. There’s ample parking here and they also offer takeaway which is great for if you just need a quick bite.

We came here on the way back from Carlisle, many times we have driven past while on holiday in the area, and said one day we will stop for food, well today was the day we stopped, we can say it was worth it, great food and plenty of it, good service.
