There's a monument to 18th century philanthropist arthur winsley in he church. the radical preacher john ball, one of the leaders of the peasants revolt, was minister of this church at one time
Loving god, please grant me peace of mind and calm my troubled heart.
A special place for family matters since the early 1900's. births, weddings, christenings, drama club, deaths, burials. it's all been here ❤️💙❤️
Visited recently for a funeral. hadn't been in this church since at primary school when this was the church associated with our school! large stone built church in prominent position. only downside is no dedicated parking, although there is a pay and display carpark nearby.
It is a late medieval period church. interior of the church has paintings, stained glass and monuments. it also has an church organ now restored and in use. the tower of st.james is a local landmark, located high above the east hill near the roman east boundary in colchester. south side of the churchyard is roman. the graveyard contains the commonwealth war grave of william rolfe boggis and many soldiers. this church is also associated with john ball of peasants’ revolt.
