Best Western The Rose and Crown Hotel

In the middle of Colchester stands this beautiful old building. Quirky with lots of twists and turns you get from one part of the building to another without leaving reception even though you can walk through the car park. Sadly this lovely period property with all its history and great feel hasn't got the infrastructure in my eyes to keep it at the level it deserves. I'm not one to be easily disgruntled and don't believe in knocking establishments or people without consideration and justification, but sadly this didn't tick many boxes, on the day we were leaving a wedding party was arriving, so maybe all attention was focused on that upcoming event. But lack of staff appearance, part time bar and kitchen closed times didn't seem to meet any hotel criteria we've ever experienced. Shower and room quality wasn't too clever either, on the positive, parking was fairly good.

This stay was the base for a group of cricketers and WAGS playing for five days in South Suffolk and Norfolk Essex. A short up up the hill the the town centre and with parking, this hotel is full of character. The staff and extremely professional and helpful. The rooms are comfortable. I can not remember having a better cooked breakfast. Produced to order, the ingredients alongside the portion sizes were brilliant. Together will fresh fruit, freshly baked bread and much more, this experience was something to look forward and especially if you had built up an appetite. Thoroughly recommended.
