All i can say is its lovely architecture to look at 😊 haven't been inside just flew the drone over for some pictures
Lovely bit of history, somewhat overlooked and forgotten in the town / city...! not going to exactly eat your time up looking round, needs a bit of tlc as noticed it had some smashed windows.
Absolutely gorgeous! you can see it from far away as it definitely stands out amongst the modern architecture. it takes you back in time being able to see and touch it. i definitely would recommend.
This historical site is the last remaining part of a former priory.
This 15th century gate house decorated in east anglian flint flushwork, vaulted roof and battlements is the only remains of the wealthy benedictine abbey of st. john believed to be founded in 1095 (the abbey was demolished and its last abbot thomas beche arrested & persecuted). the inmates of the abbey were very wealthy and maintained a good lifestyle. this gate was believed to be built to protect & strengthen the defence of the abbey and people living there, especially during the time period of peasants revolt in colchester, when they tried to attack/ loot the abbey. it is one of the overlooked monument although being in colchester town.
