As others have said, it’s the oldest and highest pub in cornwall, and the home-cooked food is extremely good, with a fantastic menu of 29 different specials when we we there! (not including desserts!) all of them sounded delicious! the atmosphere is really great, the place is absolutely spotless, and the staff couldn’t be more lovely, (-and their dogs are absolutely wonderful too). they serve you ridiculously generous portions of food, and we all left here in a food and drink induced coma! i would advise to only order one portion of chips per couple, as the basket of chips they bring out as a so called, ‘side’ would feed two people on its own. and they’re delicious! we have already agreed that we are going back again tonight, and tomorrow, and probably leaving later on sunday now, so that we can get one more visit in, before heading home! and we will be back in future. we all absolutely loved it! you know a place is very special when you genuinely consider selling your house in the southeast and moving here, just so that you can have this as your local pub! this is what a pub should be. it’s got a really wonderful community feel. great food, drink and really friendly, fun, nice people, i can’t recommend it highly enough.
Up on bodmin moor in the middle of nowhere but so very popular. and no wonder why. food delicious! very friendly staff! beautiful location on the moors and the best carvery (although i'm a vegetarian so i can't speak for the meat), but the vegetables are all just very yummy! hoping to arrange a private event there soon 😃
Make sure you're hungry as the portions are big/ large/ mahoosive, burgers are homemade and an inch thick cooked perfectly and georgeous, i had steak with peppercorn sauce which was again cooked perfectly to my asking, tried eat the apple and cinnamon crumble with custard but couldn't finish it, no for want of trying as so delicious.
We found this pub on google maps and what a find. not only the highest pub in cornwall, probably the oldest (11th century). the staff are very welcoming. extensive menu, food was delicious 😋. would fully recommend. the dogs loved it too! will definitely return. thank you, denise, richard, ziggy and poppy x
We stayed at hallagenna cottages and were recommended this place by the others. it certainly didn't disappoint! we visited the pub three times in the week, and this should say it all! a brilliant selection of food and drink. the portions were huge and, at times 'man vs food' size. we ordered chips and onion rings as side dishes and feel these were the equivalent of a whole packet of both! a great selection of beers and ales and great prices too. staff were all very friendly and welcoming! a gem of a pub.
