I visited with my daughter, unplanned but luckily it was open. there is lots of local history of the village and family's within the church and it's ground's. well worth spending an hour or so taking it all in.
Stunning church in a beautiful setting. really worth a visit.
Impressive spire draws visitors from miles away. beautiful interior. well worth visiting.
St mary's sits in the picturesque estate village of south dalton which is worth a wonder if you have time. the 208 feet high spire is the highest in east yorkshire and can be seen from all directions. the church is victorian and has some beautiful stained glass and the hotham chapel which is the resting place of the hotham family who descendents live in dalton hall. there are a few steps to climb to enter the church and no toilets but a beautiful peaceful place
The church of st mary south dalton was built between 1858 and 1861, replacing an earlier brick building. the spire is over 200 feet high and can be seen from miles around. one of the most notable features inside the church is the black and white marble monument of sir john hotham. represented in life as a knight in full armor and in death as a skeleton it is supported by four statues in the corners representing the cardinal virtues. it's a fantastic church to visit surprisingly large and impressive for such a small village.
