My experience at bertie's proper fish and chips in edinburgh left me with just one regret – i only managed to capture one photo! but believe me, there's so much to share about this amazing place. one of the highlights was being able to grab a drink at the bar while waiting for our table. it added a fun and laid-back element to the dining experience. the bustling crowd might make you wonder what the fuss is all about, but the answer is simple: the food is outstanding. that's precisely why the place is always packed – it's just that good. for anyone visiting edinburgh, i wholeheartedly recommend a visit to bertie's proper fish and chips. the flavors and quality of the food are worth every bit of the buzz. as a vegan, i was thrilled to find that they offer vegan options. it's heartening to see a place catering to various dietary preferences, making the experience all the more enjoyable. don't miss out on the chance to savor the delights of bertie's proper fish and chips in edinburgh. it's a culinary gem you'll be glad you discovered!
Very interesting place with nice interior however it is very popular which causes it to have quite the wait (i think my friends and i were waiting for a table for about 10-20 minutes) because there is a lot of demand the workers also seemed quite stressed. the fish was very delicious and basically melted on your tongue and even tho the portion might seem small at first the majority of my friends couldn’t finish their meal. overall if you want to try authentic fish and chips and are ready to have to wait for a table i would recommend this place!
I came here at the recommendation of my airbnb host my first night in edinburgh, i was so hungry and fish and chips sounded perfect. why not try the best in the area? the food was fine but i was a bit underwhelmed. the staff were all pleasant and attentive, service was very quick despite being obviously very busy. the fish and chips came out hot and crisp, exactly as i was hoping for. however, the flavor was lacking. i had to salt quite a bit especially as there was very little tartar sauce provided. and after spending extra for some chippy gravy, which was exactly as any other instantly prepared brown gravy, i wasn't sure extra tartar sauce was free for the asking. the haddock was tender and flaky, though, so that was good. i would look around and try another place before i would do a second time.
Our first stop for fish and chips on our first visit to scotland (from florida). we apparently started at the top. some of the best i've had. love the edinburgh chippy sauce. the steak meat pie was great too. great 12 yo scotch, and the cotton candy martini was fun and delicious.
The only reason i'm leaving four stars instead of five is that i found my fish and chips pretty good, but, given the reputation of bertie's, for me, it wasn't the greatest fish and chips i've ever had. the service was excellent. the atmosphere is excellent. i had some salt and pepper squid as an appetizer that was excellent. the fish and chips were good, but it wasn't amazing. i was expecting to come away from the meal with my mind blown as far as the fish and chips; my mind was not blown. it was still a very good meal, with excellent service. i'm not even suggesting i'm a fish and chips expert; i'm not. for my tastes, four out of five stars.
