Worthwhile walk, off the high street. the graveyard was also the site of historic events dating to at least 1638. for harry potter fans, sign up for the tour of tom riddle's grave.
No other dog has the heart of scotland more than greyfriars bobby does. as children in the 80s, my sister and i would watch the 1961 disney film over and over and would beg our mam to take us down from aberdeenshire to see jock and bobbies graves. i'm glad my own children have now had the privilege too. the real story of greyfriars bobby may not be accurate to the film but he deserves a wee grave and statue for the joy he brought to us all
My wife and i visited this in march 2023, as it is just near to the science museum. i touched the nose for good luck .. then won £1000 on premium bonds in april .. thanks bobby ! wife didn't touch nose and didn't win either. we have just returned from a trip to glasgow a couple of weeks ago and my wife decided to make a 20 minute detour between trains and with me pulling our suitcase from edinburgh station to visit bobby again.
After watching the old film we felt we had to visit because it is such a heartwarming story. really interesting old cemetery full of character.
Always great to see dogs memorialized! the statue draws a lot of attention which then leads you to a beautiful graveyard and church. walking around greyfriars is stunningly beautiful and peaceful. in spring with the trees blossoming makes what could be an eerie place absolutely magical. visit greyfriars to learn the sweet loyal history of a great dog and drop a stick off at his grave. just don’t rub the dogs nose! the statue is getting damaged by this.
