I booked six 1:1 sessions with John and then joined his course. I had already stopped attending a dog training group due to the use of aversive methods and this is when I found John. His online programme goes into just enough psychological research to be helpful, without bogging you down with literature (though he gives you the citations if you want them). At the risk of doing him out of business, the concept is simple: be kind. Your dog sees you as family, not as an alpha, not as someone s/he wants to dominate, but a friend or parent. We as humans respond better to rewards - I'll do something for a bar of chocolate more happily than I will to avoid getting smacked. Though the outcome might be the same, you'll have a happier and more willing learner with the former, and a better relationship with your dog. He teaches you to teach your dog. He promotes peace and kindness to you and your dog. But also the science backs up that's what works. I've read other research since John, and the respected trainers around the world agree because it's what the science says. Winner all round. I'd have no hesitation in using him again, or recommending him to others - in fact I already have.
