Wracking my brains for somewhere to take my partner for a birthday meal. I remembered visiting Tapenyaki Manchester as a child with my parents and being wowed by the displays of dragons breath dancing across sizzling prawns and steaks hissing their way across a scalding hotplate. To my suprise we didn't have to go that far! Tapenyaki Leeds is hidden away next to the Victoria quarter area. Descending a flight of stairs we walked into a well maintained but possibly a little dated subterranean room. Despite the very low occupancy we were asked to take a seat in the bar area. Drinks were served, some of the signature cocktails are truly delicious and quite beautiful. Eventually we took a seat around the grill with a group of strangers. Nine of us in total ordered our selection from various set menus and with that, the show began. Our chef played the part of the grumpy Japanese chef to a tea. His act given lie by the expertise in which he sent eggs flying and raised an inferno from a pile of diced onion. Truly, this is dinner theatre at it's best. In an age when tiktok can compress a recipe into a thirty second clip. Talent is only made scarce by the praise it deserves. But these are truly the practiced hands of a master. The food was beautiful. Those nine strangers became friends and the chef gave a modest bow. A fantastic evening. Which surprised me greatly. The food was very high quality. The price, maybe a little high. But then you're paying for the experience. Which has transitioned from modern in the 1990s to retro and sleek in the 2020s. You should visit this place for a lively time. Go with friends. Be sure to book and enjoy the experience for yourselves. We will most assuredly be back. Thank you very much for making my partners night very special Tapenyaki Leeds.
