My absolute favourite place to eat in plymouth. food is amazing, service is excellent and the atmosphere is always great, be it busy or quiet. i recommend trying everything you can and if you like steak cooked to perfection, don't bother with miller and carter... they pale into insignificance when compared to the mighty steak & omelette. i have been eating here for the last 30 years and will continue to enjoy their food for as long as i can.
This restaurant has been here for 56 years & it is a favourite haunt of the locals. it is recommended that you reserve a table as it gets very busy. the menu obviously has a selection of steaks & omelettes but also several continental dishes. slow cooked lamb kleftico; beef or chicken strogonoff amongst them. also classics like gammon steaks & ham, egg & chips. the halloumi fries with chilli dip starter were the best part of my meal. i ordered a cheese omelette & wanted an extra filling of fried onions for an extra 50p. instead they gave me a side portion of them, charging £4 & they were burnt. i ordered an affogato (ice cream topped with an espresso) for dessert. the menu stated £4.50 but i was charged £5 for it on the bill. our waiter was super attentive & friendly but the pricing discrepencies were confusing. our table used the menu prices to calculate what we owed but there was a shortfall. fair enough that prices have increased due to the ever rising cost of ingredients but they need to reflect any price increases on the menu.
I am visiting from the united states and i’ve been here about 3 months now, and i’ve been searching for a close to home steakhouse. steakhouses do not seem to be as big here as the u.s. but this place exceeded all expectations. having eaten at the marco pierre white a few times inside the crown plaza, steak & omelette is far beyond in terms of quality and pricing. just the sear alone on my steak that makes a crunch noise when i ran my knife across it spoke for itself. steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. if you are looking for a steak or a nice restaurant in general this place is arguably the best in plymouth.
I’ve often walked by this place and thought the concept of steak and omelette sounded a bit strange. however, i discovered a quality of meat that i’ve not tasted for years. the steaks and burgers were like no other i’ve tasted. i consider myself a connoisseur of burgers and these were superb, mainly because of the quality of the beef. i understand it is old school family run and it shows. great service, no long waits and obviously enjoyed by many others. although fairly busy we were treated as family. not the cheapest but if you’re looking for the ultimate steak, this is the place.
Re visiting an old friend. best steak in town. cooked to perfection. friendly staff. will be back soon. definitely worth a visit. booking essential.
