Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum
Interesting museum, although only small so not a long stay.
Very friendly welcome with a great introductory speech from the lady on the front desk. The room notes are just the right length and there are several detailed panels to read on the way round too. Lots of stairs mean it's not ideal for the less mobile amongst us but it is a lovely diverting visit with a nice gift shop containing some great items at a range of prices. We bought a leather bookmark and two Dickens novels and got change from £7. The is a small paid car park nearby although on-street parking a little further away is free.
I only went to show my friend who is over from Canada.I wanted him to get a feel for what Portsmouth used to look like along Old Commercial Road. I thought that being the birthplace of a world famous author would be a bonus ! Btw my friend loved it and the whole street too
We visited on Monday 9th October 2023, however, Charles Dickens birthplace is not open until the weekends, so we could only see it from the outside.
