Brockelhurst did not meet our expectations. A typical rate for fees is 5-10% of the build cost and their charges were 40% of the total build cost. It would be understandable if the project was particularly complicated or they took a particularly active role in management of it, but neither were the case. Their approach to design was very much a paint-by-numbers, conventional approach lacking creativity and customer focus. They did not help at all with planning issues that arose (as previous architects that we have used have done). One junior architect did the lionshare of the active involvement with more creativity and customer focus, but lacked the experience or the confidence to stand up to the managing partner on the project. The result was an expensive fee for lots of headaches and a number of disappointing compromises and design mistakes that cost us more money to rectify retrospectively.
